Our Story
The Utah Black Success Awards was founded by Marj Desius, a Haitian immigrant and owner of Blooms Magazine and Blooming Biz and Mind LLC. After moving to Utah in 2012, Marj struggled to connect with others in her field of expertise. As one of very few Black professionals in Utah at the time, she often felt pigeonholed as a singer rather than recognized for her skills in personal development and business growth.
Despite her efforts to build a local client base, Marj found that her business only attracted clients from other states and countries. Even her offer of free services failed to secure her any local clients. Marj also faced challenges finding basic personal services that catered to her specific needs, such as photography, hair and makeup services that were tailored to her brown skin.
To address these challenges, Marj and her team researched the Black business community in Utah, and created the Utah Black Success Awards. This new annual event will celebrate successful Black individuals and businesses in Utah, providing a platform for recognition and networking. By honoring Black excellence in Utah, Marj hopes to inspire and empower others to achieve success despite the unique challenges they may face.
